It's a latest illustration work I've done for wpp project. I didn't use digital tools at all in this piece it's all hand drawn using pencil and acrylic paint. I was seriously thinking to go back to analog while I'm working on this cos it's so nice making those textures by hand not by photoshop or whatever.

Hackney wicked festival

It's been while since I finished my Uni and I was a little bit lazy I admit. It was 3 weeks ago I did a workshop in Hackney Wicked festival me and my friends did potato print workshop! We had lots of visitors through a day and especially kids loved making stamps with potatos! Ireally really enjoyed creating them with kids cos they had totally flexible ideas and creativity to adults:) I want to this more often!!

Time goes by so fast especially when we are doing something seriously and creative. I eventually finished my 2 years study in the illustration pathway in Central St.Martins. It was kind of an accident to get into CSM to study illustration because I had no plan to do something different to my manga work before I moved to London. During this 2 years hard working days I've learned so many thing which I've never learned in Japan, especially how concept is important to our works.
Our degree show was truly amazing and I'd really thank to all the classmates who made it success. There was a small surprise too, I was nominated to the Josh Turley memorial prize for my final silk screen printed project about Japan's recent earthquake. unfortunately I missed the prize but was really glad to be nominated.

The show was only a week and everyone didn't want it to finish because it's too good. I already miss my lovely classmates but I'm sure this is not the end it's a new start, I'm very exciting to open a new door.

This is the proof that I've worked a bit hard to finish all my college projects, now we have a BIG show coming next week! Central Saint.Martins BA (Hons) Graphic design Degree show 2011 opens to the public on Thursday 16 June 2011 till 22 June at the Nicholls & Clarke Buildings, 3–10 Shoreditch High Street, London E1 6PG; from 16–22 June (12–8pm; except 22 June, 12–6pm). I swear the quality of works are very very high so you shouldn't miss this!!

The Royal Wedding project

The Royal wedding has already gone but my project came up! This project started a little suggestion from my tutor when he said ' Why don't you do some project about the Royal wedding??' I said ' Why not' so I went down to the street on 29th April to see the crowds on the street. I'm neutral about the Royal family stuff but I just liked the people who enjoyed the big day in their own style and I just wanted to express that there are so many different type of people on that day. Who care? who doesn't? but they all live in same country that's very unique and the reason I like UK. This works has been screen printed and will be exhibited in Central St.Martins graphic design degree show coming on 15th of June.

Sometimes I find nice but half finished images in my sketch books, they are born from my doodles and quite rough but still have some potential to be a good work.
This donkey sketches were one of my idea for work in progress show's post card but I didn't have time to finish this to bring to the meeting for selecting works. Poor donkey had nowhere to go but still carrying his heavy stuff....sniff sniff....well so, why not give him a peace?
I coloured this donkey with photoshop using collage papers. I personally don't like using colour swatches so tend to use the colour of old magazine's papers but still trying to find the best way.

Spring has come

28th of March was my birthday I got a birthday e-mail from my mom who lived in Japan. She said that usually Japan has had full of cherry blossoms every year on my birthday but this year only a few trees have bloomed. It looks as if they know what's going on in Japan after the big, big disaster.

We don't realise that our life is made of piece of miracles. To be born, to walk, to speak,to listen,to eat, to meet someone, everything we do in our ordinary days are actually the most precious things. I just thought so after watching numbers and numbers of news about the disaster.

A day before 28th, my house mates throw a lovely garden BBQ for my birthday. It was warm enough in the day time, birds were singing and all the trees in the garden seemed about to bloom. I saw a happiness in our small garden.

I appreciate from bottom of my hear to my great mum and to the fact that I live, create and have many lovely friends around. And I do wish all the sorrow and pain of people who have been suffered by the quake will away soon and we could create a better and more beautiful country.

私の誕生日である３月２８日、日本に住む母からお祝いのメールを受け取った。毎年私の誕生日には満開に近く咲く桜が今年はいくつかしか開花していない、まるで今の日本を語るかのようだと母は綴っていた。

私たちの生活が実はたくさんの小さな奇跡の集積であると気づくのは難しい。生まれおちて、歩き、話し、聞き、食べて　誰かに出逢う、私たちが当たり前の日常でしていることこそがかけがえのないものだと、止めどなく流れる震災のニュースを見て思った。

誕生日の前日、ハウスメイトたちが庭でバーベキューを催してくれた。庭で集うにはもう十分暖かく、鳥たちは歌い、庭の木々はもうすぐそこまで、といった様子のつぼみをつけていた。
小さな庭に幸せを見た。

生んでくれた素敵なお母さんと、今私が生きてなにかを創りたくさんの素敵な友達に囲まれていることに心から感謝を。そして今被災地でがんばっている人々の痛みや悲しみが一日も早くなくなることを、日本がこれからまたより良く美しい国になることを祈って。

Last week my course CSM BA illustration had a half term show 'Work in Progress' at Colomb Art Gallery in Marylebone. It was successfully ended by high quality and big amount of illustration works. I was encouraged by my classmates' great works:) Hummm I can't wait for the degree show! but I have to carry on working hard!

正月なので元旦は韓国風のお雑煮を、そして今日はこないだ炊いたお汁粉に白玉を浮かせておやつに頂きました。しかし今回作った白玉、ロンドンの日本食材屋さんで購入した白玉粉を使ったんですが、あまり美味しくなかった。。ものすごく粉粉した味がする。何故だ？？お汁粉自体はお水を多めに入れ替えた割に薄くならずにおいしくできただけに残念です。明日は普通にお餅を入れて食べよう。

Yesterday I had a stall with my friends at X'mas design and art fair in Abney Public hall, Stoke Newington. There were many nice hand craft,vintage stuff stalls in the fair we mainly sold our hand made paper goods,X'mas cards. I was happy that my screen printed cat notebooks were almost sold out:) I want to have more stalls in other art fairs next year.

After all my hard work I handed in my dissertation yesterday,it was 6000w thesis plus visual work. My thesis is about frame in comic art mainly discuss about US comic and Manga. I made a comic work that have two stories start from both side of pages left and right as Western comic starts from left side and manga starts from right side. Making manga is hard work but I just love it! hope my tutor like my work.

I received a parcel from my mum it contained mainly Japanese foods:) ( thanks mum!) and also DM of the x'mas card show I'm joining which is going to take place in December in Yokohama. This show is produced by my illustration agency and I made 3 different design x'mas cards, a new year cad and 3 design x'mas drink holders for the show. I won't be able to make for the show as I'll be on my holiday during the show but hope as many guests visit it:)x

I can't believe it's already November! How time flies...( sigh, sigh, sigh...) It's been very windy here in London. I was walking to my house through the park the other day and it was windy like a film scene. Colourful fallen leaves were dancing in the air in front of my face and it was very pretty. Winter is my best season I just love it. I love snuggle my face to my scarf, love the smell of the air, it's very pretty and romantic season for me. But my hedgehog Johnny doesn't like winter as he's an African boy so he's wrapping himself with his towel all the time....

I hadn't sketches for ages so I did this in a cafe while I was drinking latte. Well, I had some good news last week. Firstly, my original design drink tumblers is going on sale from 1st of November in Tokyu Hands Ikebukuro and Shinjyuku branches. They are three designs for X's mas. Secondly, my original illustration for X'mas and new year 2011 ( Bunny year !) are going on sale as mobile desk top screens for download ( Japan only). More details are coming up later!

It's a very London weather today ( cloudy and cold...) but my work desk is shinning with my new mac book pro which arrived 2days ago:) My previous mac book was 13 inch screen but this time I changed to 15 inch screen as I consider my very bad eye sight and it was right choice, 2inch difference is huge! Now, I'm on my tea time with a very lovely pumpkin whoopie from a local cake shop violet. It's time for work!

I've been to Aurel a small village in Provence for 10 days. Everything I saw,met,smelled,tasted there was totally amazing and beautiful. The ground was dry but there were full of green and lavender fields( unfortunately they were already harvested). The weather was sunny everyday and sometimes really windy, never rained it was totally different to London. I'm dreaming about visiting there again....
南仏、Aurelという小さな町へ１０日ほど行ってきました。そこで見、出逢い、嗅ぎ、味わったすべてが驚きと美しさで溢れていました。大地は乾燥しているのに緑に溢れ、そしてたくさんのラベンダー畑がありました。（残念ながらもうすでに収穫されてしまってましたが）
天気は毎日眩しく晴れ、たまにひどく強い風が吹きましたが雨は一度も降らず、ロンドンとはまるで違う環境でした。またいつか訪れる機会を夢見つつ。。。

Last 2 weeks, I was working on this year's Beaujolais Nouveau wine label's design. The wines will be sold only in restaurants in Tokyo and some in Kanagawa prefecture Japan. These 3 images are sample designs I made but not have been selected as final design. I'll put up the final design when it comes up with wine. Designing labels was a bit of challenge as I had never done it but I enjoyed it so much. I can't wait to see my Beaujolais in November!

My course will have term end soon and we'll have a show on next Wednesday. I dropped my works for the show includes this cartoon today. Johnny is my little African pygmy hedgehog I have as my pet and he's so cute and funny. I've been having him for 4 month and he's getting a really good company.
Hedgehog is a nocturnal animal so he sleeps whole day and wakes up when the room gets completely dark. I let him play around my room during the night and now he never goes back to his house. He sleeps beside of my bed!

As a result I completely messed up the design and cried...sniff sniff sniff...:( But It seemed like some problem or updating on blogger itself last night. Now I fixed this design slightly. Phew!

This is a working in progress shot of a children's book I'm illustrating. The story was made by a good friend of mine a year ago (!!) but I haven't finished illustrating this... It's not because I'm lazy, it's because I had been experimenting different style of drawing. I really like hand- drawn illustration but I've never gotten a result I'm satisfied with. So for this illustration I mostly used digital but combined some collage and hand-drawn line.

Last Friday, I went to see an exhibition Draw to Royal College of Art. There were some marvelous sketch books from RCA staffs and renowned artist such as Quentin Blake and Sir Peter Blake. I like to see my-self in someone's point of view cos I look like a different person ( probably only me can feel....). Keita is an artist studies and lives in Paris. Here are some photos from my group exhibition ILLUSTRATORS opening at the moment in Daikanyama Tokyo.My parcel somehow arrived yesterday but in case it doesn't arrive I made an excuse illustration to explain why my goods are not on the display stool.( basically I drew the Icelandic volcano smoking cigarette so the UK wrapped by the smoke...) Anyway, now it's all ready and waiting for you to come!

The exhibition starts tomorrow. My sister worked super hard for show up my works in the gallery and now everything has done.(phew!) However, my parcel,includes my portfolio,business cards and post cards for sale for the exhibition hasn't arrived to Japan yet!!
I used parcel force and it should have been 4 days to reach but because of Icelandic volcano....oh no.... now I don't know where my parcel is...
So I made this illustration to explain visitors the reason why I don't have these items. Hopefully the parcel arrive tomorrow....

My first group illustration exhibition ILLUSTRATORS is opening this Tuesday and tomorrow is showing up day for it. As I couldn't make it to Japan, my sweet sister is helping me a lot! She's been running around for choosing frames, printing my works.... yes,everything! I'm so glad that I've got such a sweet and caring sister...:) We've been having skype meeting everyday. I really thank for it cos I can talk to my sister in Japan without worry about dial cost!

グループ展ILLUSTRATORSが開催されます。私もイラスト，コミック作品を出展しますので
お近くにお越しの方是非会場へ足を運んでみて下さい。といっても、残念ながらアイスランドの火山噴火の影響もあって日本へ帰国はできないのですが、遠くイギリスから展覧会の成功を祈ってます。初めての展覧会参加なのでいろいろ足らない部分もあるかと思いますが、誰かに気にっていただけたら嬉しいです。

A group exhibition for illustrators, ILLUSTRATORS is opening from next Tuesday 27 th until 2nd of May at Hillside terrace in Daikanyama Tokyo. I wake up quite late these days as I've been watching my hog in the midnight.. I take him out from his house in the night then leave him in a kind of "play pen" until morning. He's active around 3 to 5am then goes to sleep 6ish. It's very very fun to watching how he plays. He likes running on his wheel and always trying to climb up my bed:) ( he can!) That's why I can't be an early bird...:P

Currently I'm working on photoshop for making my illustration work. I usually don't use any colour on phoshop. Instead of them I use scanned images like old magazine, scrap from free paper, ticket,paper bag, any piece of paper I can find in my daily life. I'm trying to make my images don't look like digital work as I prefer hand-drawn works.

My little new house mate

He's my new house mate. He's an African pygmy hedgehog just born this new year. I had been wanted them for ages and finally got one from very nice breeder in Sussex. It was quite long journey to pick him up to Sussex from London but I was so excited on my way home carrying him in a small carry bag I was like a small child. The day he came to my house was 14 th of Feb so his name is now Mr Johnny H Valentine:) I'll definitely draw lots of hedgehog picture!

My new manga work "Winter Sleep"is now on the monthly shoujo manga magazine The Margarett Feb by Shueisha. It's a 16 pages short story and about winter fairly tale which I like. Please take a look it if you find it in some book shops.

Finally I ordered my business card using MOO last night. This illustration is for my card. It's a kind of my portrait me always wants wear a top hat like a Mad hatter or could be Willy Wonka the charlie and the chocolate factory. The key motif is my long favorite and means that this card is a secret door to my art world.

I watched this lovely film last night. I didn't realize that the directer of this is actually Miranda July. I knew her from her novel No one belongs here more than you which a good friend of mine lent to me a few years ago.
And I've been to see her art work at Yokohama Triennale 08' I loved it. This shoes scene was the sweetest scene for me.

Saturday junk market

I like spending my time at markets on weekend. My favorite one is in Kingsland high street it's a junk market and I think this is the real market. Everything is cheap cheap cheap! and we can find some lovely things here like the sewing machine. that sewing machine was amazingly beautiful but it was too heavy to take it home.... shame... After the junk market I went to the Broadway market to have a blunch ( see this banana caramel pie!!). Foods are lovely in this market but I prefer the junk market.

It's a bit early to notice but I'm going to join an illustration exhibition is going to be held in my home town Yokohama Japan in this December. The exhibition" Merry Christmas & Happy New Year" is an seasonal greeting card show, more than 100 Japanese illustrators will exhibit and sell their greeting cards during the show time. I have made 3 christmas greeting cards and one new year card. The show will start 12/9 to 12/25 at Yokohama Yamate Iwasaki Museum. I joined the climate camp at Blackheath for volunteer for visionOntv the media team. First day, I made banners for the climate camp tv studio then helped studio shooting. I was a completely beginner for shooting films ( no, I have shot some films when I was in art uni but I was terrible at this....)though I learnt how to use the camera by the media team. As I'm from Japan, I've never met this kind of big,exciting,civilized event so I was just amazed at people's solidarity.

This morning,I received a 3 month late birthday gift from a good friend of mine in Japan. In the letter I found 2 lovely hedgehogs ( I've been wanting have a hedgehog as a pet) and lovely pattern masking tapes. Thank you Ms "E"! Give me a real hedgehog next birthday:)
