P-GUI Sticker

A physical prototyping tool for designing the UX of Ubiquitous Space

"P-GUI Sticker" for prototyping the augmented interface within the actual environment in the thesis process

Won the Gold Winner at the concealed category “Advanced Design & Design Research” of A Design Award 2017

Working period : Feb.2016 ~ Mar.2016

From the conventional viewpoint, the diverse types of interactive GUI for devices, installations, spaces have been emerging with immersive usabilities. In talking about the point of how user adapts to and interact with them, UX is fundamentally considered, designed as a main priority that ables to influence the whole usability and GUI composition afterward.

Particularly in designing augmented GUI that coexists within an actual environment in a concept of Ubiquitous space, implementing the prototyping and the experiment of how user interacts with and configure the augmented GUI is significant.

Initiated from this motivation, the basic UX concept of P-GUI sticker was made, developed into a methodological outcome that intuitively helps GUI/ UI designers and UX architect/developers to easily understand users’ inherent intention of interacting with augmented information.

To introduce how to play,

1. Several types of stickers on which the diverse versions of GUI are printed are arranged along with the survey paper about informative tendency of getting access to application via devices, prior to user-prototyping experimentation.

(See the picture below)

2. After explaining about the purpose of the experiment, every participants are encouraged to utilize the P-GUI Sticker to attach onto any spots, spaces, surfaces they want. Depending on where they intended to put the sticker and what kind of stickers they made use of, their intentional needs regarding situational specificity is easily clarified by physical stickers, compared to just talking about it with imagination.

3. Through this process, UX designer easily gets to efficiently grasp the user’s needs and effectively recreate the augmented GUI based on extracted insights.

Consideration on informative affordance in terms of usability

In daily life, people perceive diverse versions of information via various types of mediums, particularly, in accessing information via smart devices. Depending on how UX structure of application is planned, users’ informative recognition is influenced. Moreover, under a certain situation that demands a quick solution, user’s accessibility on information becomes limitative.
